Just over two months ago, Urbana Interim Chief of Police Richard Surles released a statement which revealed that more than ten percent the City’s police officers were looking to apply to the Illinois State Police (ISP).
Check CU sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Illinois State Police Merit Board asking for applications from Urbana officers in the six months prior to Surles’s statement.
The ISP provided application packets for four Urbana officers, all of whom submitted their application in May of 2022:
- Adam Davis Marcotte – 5/23/2022
- Bradley Alexander McCormack – 5/9/2022
- Justin Basil Merritt – 5/13/2022
- Colby Grant Wright – 5/30/2022
This apparent exodus began just over a month after Richard Surles and Matthew Bain became the new Interim Chief and Deputy Chief for the Urbana Police Department.
The ISP applications (provided below) contain the usual questions about the applicant’s education and past work history, and also contain questions about an applicant’s past drug usage and social media accounts.
