The scene of a drive-by shooting on the 400 block of West Illinois Street in Urbana. Urbana Police block the street while searching for shell casings.

An otherwise calm and quiet Saturday afternoon in West Urbana was interrupted by a sound that has become more familiar in the past year.  Around 2:38pm, a drive-by shooting on the 400 block of West Illinois Street sent four distinctive gunshots ringing through the neighborhood.

A car heading north on South Birch Street squealed its tires as it turned west and sped down Illinois Street.  In addition to the driver, the car appeared to have three passengers, all of whom wielded handguns.  The shooters appeared to be targeting 408 W Illinois Street, but the motive is unknown.

The perpetrators pointed their guns out of the car windows and fired three shots at the home on approach.  Then the car slowed slightly before the fourth shot was fired back at the home.  The individual seated behind the driver made that shot with his entire torso out of the window while pointing his gun across the roof of the car and taking careful aim.

The vehicle was a 2011 or earlier black Chevrolet Impala with a distinctive front right hub cap which appears to be missing a section.  The shooters left at high speed and turned south on South Orchard Street and then west on Oregon.

The perpetrators were seen in a black Chevrolet Impala. In this image, the individual in the rear passenger side seat can be seen pointing a gun out of the window.

The location of the shooting is just a few blocks from the University of Illinois, and West Illinois Street is heavily trafficked by students and other residents.  Several neighbors were walking or cycling within a block of the shooting when it occurred.  One man pushing a stroller with a small child was walking on the sidewalk on the south side of Illinois Street and was immediately adjacent to the vehicle when the shooting started.  Another neighbor on the same block witnessed the entire event from her porch.

Urbana Police were on scene about three minutes after the shooting.  They interviewed witnesses and located two shell casings in the street.

Urbana Police officers searched the area and found two shell casings in the street.

Witnesses say as many as eight individuals fled from the targeted home before police arrived.

There appear to have been no injuries and it is not yet clear to what extent any property may have been damaged.

Correction: the original article mistakenly noted the time of the shooting as 1:38pm but the correct time is 2:38pm.
