The Illinois State Police (ISP) have finally issued a response to a Freedom of Information Act Lawsuit which was filed with the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Champaign County last year.
The lawsuit was filed on October 1st, 2021 by Check CU Founder Christopher Hansen after the City of Champaign and the Illinois State Police both refused to supply records related to an officer-involved shooting that occurred in May 2021. The shooting resulted in the deaths of City of Champaign Police Officer Chris Oberheim and Champaign resident Darion Lafayette. Another Champaign Officer, Jeffrey Creel, was left injured.
Assistant Attorney General Xinyi Wei filed an entry of appearance on behalf of Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul on February 10th. Wei responded to the complaint with boilerplate denials and lack of knowledge on March 4th.
An entry and response is generally due within 30 days of the time a complaint is filed, but the ISP waited for five months. The City of Champaign took 47 days to issue their response.
The City of Champaign and Illinois State Police responses are provided below.
