Video of a drive-by shooting in Urbana, Illinois shows a terrifying interruption to an otherwise calm and quiet Saturday afternoon.  In a matter of seconds, multiple bystanders suddenly found themselves within the scene of a drive-by shooting which appears to have targeted a home just a few blocks east of the University of Illinois.

In the video, a black Chevrolet Impala speeds through the West Urbana neighborhood area.  In addition to the driver, the car appears to have three passengers, all of whom wield handguns.

The perpetrators point their guns out of the car windows and fire three shots at the home on approach.  Then the driver slows down and a fourth shot is fired at the home.  The individual seated behind the driver makes that shot with his entire torso out of the window while pointing his gun across the roof of the car and taking careful aim.

The shooters fled at high speed and turned south on South Orchard Street and then west on Oregon.

The event was captured by a resident’s front door security camera.  Check CU received permission today to release the video.

The location of the shooting is just four blocks from the University of Illinois, and West Illinois Street is heavily trafficked by students and other residents.  The neighborhood is often referred to as the “WUNA”, which stands for West Urbana Neighborhood Association.

Several neighbors were walking or cycling within a block of the shooting when it occurred.  One man pushing a stroller with a small child can be seen walking on the sidewalk on the south side of Illinois Street when the shooting started.  Another neighbor on the same block witnessed the entire event from her porch.

Urbana Police were on scene about three minutes after the shooting.  They interviewed witnesses and located two shell casings in the street.

Urbana Police officers searched the area and found two shell casings in the street.

Witnesses said as many as eight individuals fled from the targeted home before police arrived.
