At the October 5th Champaign City Council meeting, a lengthy discussion was held about the Champaign Police Department’s proposal to install 36 automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) at a cost of $189,000 for 2 years (view the full proposal here).
A fair portion of the discussion focused on the ethical use of a system that photographs and tracks every single vehicle in the City. In a move that practically defines irresponsible government, Council member Tom Bruno predicted that such a technology would be abused, then he voted in favor of the proposal anyways. Video below:
