The 2021 elections in the Champaign-Urbana area has attracted perhaps a record number of newcomer candidates who decided to become involved because they were displeased with their local government. Rita Conerly, a community organizer known for speaking against government and police misconduct, and for organizing police reform protests, is one such example.
Conerly, who grew up in Champaign and is now raising eight children there, is running for Champaign Township Supervisor.
“I am running as I feel there is a need for change reflective of a changing population in Champaign. This change includes race, diversity, inclusion, ethnic and socioeconomic status.”
If elected, Conerly will oversee the disbursement of general assistance funds for residents lacking financial stability. She would also like to see the available funding increased, which is something that Cunningham Township just accomplished through a recent referendum.
When asked what she hoped to accomplish, Conerly listed a number of items:
“First, I hope to gain the trust of our most vulnerable populations of people. Second, I want to develop a strong program of advocacy for populations at risk within Champaign by identifying weaknesses that require township assistance. Additionally, I would like to create outreach opportunities to make resources more accessible.”
Conerly has great confidence in her ability to handle the Township Supervisor position. She noted her first-hand experience in caring for her own family, which could give her an understanding for what other families in Champaign need in terms of support.
“I have just always used my voice to make sure my children have a quality of not only life but education and health and just all the things that encompass the best quality of life for them as possible.”
Conerly previously served as Chairman of the Champaign Early Childcare Center Policy Council. She also serves as a board member for the Champaign Urbana Area Project (CUAP) and stays actively engaged with the Champaign Schools PTA.
Rita Conerly will contend with incumbent Andy Quarnstrom for the Champaign Township Supervisor position in the Democratic Primary on February 23rd.

She had a major role in all the discord within our community this past year. She was instrumental in closing down The Rogue barber shop in Champaign. She is not the best choice for a leadership role in our community. Do your research people.
Who are you, that does not mean she will not do a great job in this position, that is if your comment is accurate. Really!!!!!!
I think she would Township Supervisor. Go little Sis. You Rock
